Ed Ouellette: Design with Purpose
2013 AIGA Design Business for Breakfast Series
Design with Purpose
Designers spend a lot of time worrying about scope creep, but there is a creep of a different nature that can be just as harmful and it can come from any angle, including from the design team itself. It's called a Superfluosity – something added into a project that is pointless (though sometimes cool, pretty, or expensive) in nature which adds little value to the project's purpose. These Superfluosities not only hurt the client, but also your studio's integrity. Join us for a talk by Ed Ouellette which will remove the designer's self-imposed blinders and reveal how these Superfluosities get into your project, how you identify them, and what you can do to make sure you keep them out! You'll walk into work with a whole new perspective.
About the speaker:
Halfway through his third and final year of law school, Ed Ouellette decided against practicing law. Instead, he felt compelled to do "something with computers." To the amazement of his friends and consternation of his family, Ed moved up I-5 from Portland to Seattle shortly after earning his J.D. He currently is the Interactive Manager/Producer for Phinney Bischoff, a brand strategy, design and digital firm based in Seattle. Over its 30 years, Phinney Bischoff's clients have included global brands such as Boeing and Microsoft and local heros like the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Symphony.
Il Fornaio is located in Pacific Place. Parking is available in the underground ramp. Take the elevator to concourse and escalator to the first floor. If you're on foot, street access is from Olive Way and up the escalator. Doors open at 7:15AM.
