What Happens at Wayzgoose /

Wayzgoose is the annual design smackdown at the School of Visual Concepts where the power of a steamroller presses ink onto a massive sheet of paper. Wayzgoose is a lot of fun, but also demands a lot of preparation. Here's a behind-the-scenes report on what spectators didn't get to see.

The Design

The first step in the Wayzgoose poster process was conceiving a design. This year, we reached out to the entire AIGA community and requested to see everyone's best shot at a letterpress poster. The brief asked for a design that would tie in with Into the Woods and would measure up to the force of a steamroller. Check out submissions by our contributors:

The Carving

Our carvers, who brought the design to life, did a tremendous job. This was an amazing opportunity for professionals to get away from the screen and get to use their hands. Carving out the selected design into a nearly 3ft x 4ft linoleum sheet demanded precision and vision—and a lot of time. Our 16-person team of carvers met this challenge with smiling faces and for that we are grateful.

The Printing

Once the linoelum stencil was ready, the final step was to show up at SVC and to add ink. Thank you to those who got their hands dirty inking this massive stencil. And thank you to our paper wranglers who kept their hands clean so that our final printed posters came out smudge-free. Photographer Jen Au captured the day's action in all of its glory.
