Michael Hodgson / Designer

The range of Michael Hodgson's design influence extends from the Westside LA mini-mall to the global thinktank. He has whetted our appetite for meals and media, furniture and fashion. He has helped to shape the public presence of some of the most interesting cultural producers at work today. And he is one of the reasons you really do judge a book by its cover.

Since establishing Ph.D with Clive Piercy in 1988, Hodgson has designed visual programs and publications noted for their crisp thinking, clear expression and meticulous craft.

As a creative advocate for his clients, Michael strives to bring his work and that of his team to the highest standard of intelligence, production and, increasingly, responsibility through a growing interest in sustainable design. Along the way, he has helped to redefine the way companies and industries look at themselves, and to expand their view of what's possible.

In 1979, Michael moved to Santa Monica, California after serving as art director of Harpers & Queen magazine. He has taught at Art Center College of Design and Otis School of Art & Design, and is past President of the Los Angeles chapter of the AIGA. Michael now sits on the AIGA national board as Chair, AIGA presidents council. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London and Brighton College of Art. Michael is married, and he and his wife Gill have three beautiful daughters: Lily, Maudie Rae and Lucie.

Ph.D is a design office that develops visual personalities for companies and business visionaries. With wit and well-crafted detail, Ph.D enables clients to do what they do better.
