mgmt / Design Studio

The Brooklyn design trio comprising mgmt packages art and information through museum exhibits, books, print materials, graphics and other media. With a client list including the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the International Center of Photography, the Guggenheim Museum, the New York Times, Phaidon Press, and the Yale University Gallery of Art, they have shaped the look of art for the 21st century. Their greatest asset is their ability to use design in ways that communicates in ways that are clean, elegant and clever, but never merely decorative.

Ariel Apte, a founding partner of mgmt, began her career as a paper engineer for pop-up books, reflecting her continued interest in the intersection of visual and built forms. She received her MFA from Yale in 1999. mgmt's other founder, Alicia Cheng, graduated in the same class. Before starting mgmt with Ariel, she worked as a senior designer for Method, New York, and was the co-design director at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Sarah Gephart, also Yale '99, worked at 2x4 (a New York design studio) before coming to mgmt, producing books for the Guggenheim and identities for New York galleries. All three designers are frequent guest critics and lecturers at prestigious design programs on the East Coast.
